Affiliates - Old Friends & New in the fold

June 22, 2008

The Alaska state fed is proud to announce the affiliation of two unions. The United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1496 represents just over 2500 members statewide under the leadership of Pete Boehlen, business manager. The UFCW nationally has been part of the Change to Win unions since pulling out of the National AFL-CIO a couple years ago. However, through the signing of a solidarity charter after the UFCW's executive board unanimously voted to re-affiliate last week, local 1496 is now a full-fledged member again of the Alaska AFL-CIO. Welcome back UFCW members!

Also affiliating for the first time is the Association of Flight Attendants, Local 30, a branch of the Communications Workers of  America (CWA). The union represents 289 members, all of whom work for Alaska Airlines and are based in Anchorage. After an unexpected call from recently elected president of Alaska Airlines Council 30, Stephen Couckuyt, the local was eager to affiliate immediately. So, the next time you board an Alaska Airlines Flight, be sure to offer a welcome and greeting to our new brothers & sisters.
